What is a QR Code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that can store various types of data. Originally invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for the automotive industry, QR codes have become ubiquitous for storing URLs, contact information, WiFi credentials, and more.
QR Code Types Explained
- URL: Links to websites when scanned
- Text: Displays plain text message
- WiFi: Automatically connects to a network
- vCard: Adds contact to phone's address book
- Email: Opens email app with pre-filled data
- Phone: Initiates a phone call
- SMS: Opens messaging app with text
Error Correction Levels
QR codes have built-in error correction that allows them to be read even when partially damaged:
- L (Low): 7% of data can be restored
- M (Medium): 15% of data can be restored
- Q (Quartile): 25% of data can be restored
- H (High): 30% of data can be restored
Best Practices
- Use high contrast colors for better scanning
- Keep content concise for faster scanning
- Test your QR code before printing
- Use higher error correction for printed materials
- Ensure adequate quiet zone (white space) around code
